Returning to Your Natural State
What aspect of yourself have you not been in touch with lately?
In college, I took a science class for non-science people. I don’t remember much; however, one thing the professor said stuck with me: “Over time, the winding river (now straight) will return to its natural state.” I interpreted this to mean you can change an aspect of something but left to its own devices, it will return to its original way of being. Lately, I’ve felt an affinity with the winding river, for I, too, have returned to my natural state of being an artist.
Over the past six months of caregiving, I’ve had minutes here and there to take photos. Capturing life’s little moments reminded me how much joy I receive from photography. And in those moments of capturing life’s little moments, I realized I’d taken my photography for granted. Because it came easily, I dismissed it and focused on the straight and narrow path of corporate work.
Getting closer to death during caregiving has made it clear what lights me up and what doesn’t. It has also sparked ideas on how I can bring more photography into my everyday, so I can be like that winding river and flow.
Last month, I decided to offer my shutterbug services to the world and I’m delighted to have my first portrait customer on the books. And in the coming weeks, I will add a shop to the website for photo prints. I’m so thankful to recognize an aspect of my artist self that has always been there.

It’s likely something that comes so easy to you, it’s overlooked! I invite you to reacquaint yourself with your talent that’s hiding in plain sight. I have not doubt it will bring you immense joy.
